My husband, age 30 has type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed at the age of 14. In July 2023 my 7 year old son, jacob was diagnosed with type 1 as well. I thought I knew enough about type 1 diabetes through my husband but I was so wrong!! He kept so much of what he went through every day away from me. I feel very guilty for not making the effort to learn more, but when I asked him he said there was no need. I now know that he just didn’t want me to worry about him. When Jacob was diagnosed our daughter was only two months old. We were juggling our new life with a newborn baby and a diabetic child, it was challenging to say the least but Jacob has amazed me and my husband. We are so proud of him. It seems to run in my husbands family as his mother and great grandmother also have/had type 1 diabetes so it didn’t come as a complete surprise when Jacob was diagnosed.
